what a terrible thing to lose
Here is a list of Q readers' top ten Guilty Pleasures (a concept which has somewhat shot its bolt).
Surely there is no such thing as a Guilty Pleasure - if you enjoy it, then there's no problem. Just don't laugh at Crowded House if you've got a Razorlight record in your collection.

Now, you see, this is what I object to!
If you'd ended that post with, "Surely there is no such thing as a Guilty Pleasure - if you enjoy it, then there's no problem" then everyone would walk happy feeling warm and smiley. But no! You add a vaguely threatening dismissal of Razorlight! No one cares if you like Crowded House! If anyone did, their opinion wouldn't be worth worrying about! So hey, teacher, leave those kids alone.
you're "well wrong", Al. ;)
"Tastemakers" care - which means that we have to watch the oh so cool likes of Razorlight from every media orifice - because they're hep ...
If no-one actually challenges this then it becomes the accepted order of things ...
Paytes
Oh for fuck's sake - "tastemakers"?!
You're a grown man! Don't worry about it!
But I have to fuckin listen/see/read about the fuckers - so yes, i do bloody care
P
Oh but why? But why?
There's an endless stream of new bands and acts - some good, some bad, most average. It'll go on forever. Raging about who people find popular is pointless. They fill a need at the time. People identify with Razorlight because it makes them feel edgy or whatever. We can see that that's silly, but we were the same, and it'll be the same in the future. Why worry about it? You can't expect people to do months of research into the history of popular music before they decide what they like - they just want to listen to something on their way to work/while they're getting ready, and they'll take what's around at the time. I don't think you should have a problem with that.
It's the more the dismissal of other stuff (esp non white boy rock) that gets my goat, Al. Like that's the only valid music.
the great thing about TOTP was that it was democratic in the sense that represented the charts and therefore what people bought ... rather than some white rock hegemony! ;)
Pato's patella
You could make an argument that taste has never been broader - although perhaps not as broad as you'd like. But yeah, get used to it, more tv channels, the internet etc, less coming together in front of the same programmes. But that's a good thing too - more exposure for the country, funk etc Laura says was lacking from TOTP.
Bonus fact: TOTP was NEVER that good. Every two or three weeks you'd get one good act. You only watched it because people at school did and peer pressure dictated you did too.
Disagree about the Pops, BTW.
The period when I first started watching was a bit of a halcyon age for TOTP so my memories of it may be skewed.
78-84 really were great years for pop in general so the Pops just reflected that, I spose ...
P
I apologise for my parting shot and I take it back.
What really gets to me (and a lot of people apparently) is the over-zealous media machine pumping out free advertising for such bands (e.g. Channel 4's recent Razorlight weekend, Sandi Thom's non-existent 'internet birth').
Everyone had an equal go of it on TOTP. If you fucked it up, that was your lot for the week.
I am not ashamed to say I think "Somewhere Else" is a tune.
But then I'm exclusively listening to Fairport Convention at the moment, so make of that opinion what you will.
I'm late to all of this, but what is 10cc doing on there?? Chris has given me Sancerre and *4* pomegranate champagnes but that has nothing to do with it. Digital Penetration from the label alt-delete is quite good, and only costs 3.99 (obviously you'll be ripping it burning it what ho tomorrow laas) XX
ps requests for friday - i believe in miracles the jackson sisters: PREFREBABLABLEY from my new Renaissance cd (Cough, Jamie's present, I havent listened to it or anything) as it samples Snap, The Power at the start in a cool way: Fact :)
Re previous posts - the TOTP memorial programming was absurd at least and a travesty professionally for all involved I COULDN@T BELIEVE MY EYES. Best bit was knowing Exactly what was happening in Tuf Mansions when Wilder came on! Made my night. I'm going to bed Laas, I'm meant to be in yrs in about 9 hours xxx To quote Justin Timberlake, Fellas: goodnight. Laydeez: Good mornin. Uh-huh.
Hello, I thought this blog had died, then I checked and everyone is here having the same argument. Brilliant.
How is everyone?
I'm still embarrassed at knocking over a drink of janes in the social at jamies birthday a while back. I am a berk.
I hope you haven't been lying awake worrying about that. I seem to remember being drunker than you (at least to start with).
Yes, still have nightmares.
Where are you teaching these days?
My current guilty pleasure is Jamie Cullum, i've been listening all week.
Very Guilty.
I have a job starting September at Hampstead School in Camden.
How are you?
Great, jim is working somewhere up there now. He's a proper teacher now ( and getting married in autumn!)
I am alright thanks. I've not been out for weeks,I just stay in and put shelves up.
Is Randy Newman a guilty pleasure? He's the other one i've been listening to all week.
Have you tried http://www.pandora.com ? Someone sent me this last night and i've had it running all night whilst working. You pop the name of a band or singer or whatnot that you like into the little box and it plays you songs by other bands that you may like. Most of them were quite good and i'd not heard them, so i've now got about ten new bands to download. Magic.
PS try jens , I love him. Pandora played me a Finn brothers song after I popped him in the box.

When I get broadband I will defo try that. Sounds like a music nut's paradise.
How weird - wonder if Jim's working at the same school as me? I've been having a lot of nightmares about going back to school.
Hello. No, it's not that particular one, I forget the name but it's in Camden. What sort of ages will these kids be?
11-18 - the 'trickiest' age...
Ah, but the most rewarding, I'm sure!
hmmmmmmmmm. They don't seem very grateful at the time. I'm taking on board the implied irony in your comment.
4-11 year olds are tricky, too, just in a different way (weeing on their shoes etc.).
Miss! Dat iz liberteeeey! X
I think it's time you wrote another post.
"It's pandemonium round our house!"
Hey LP, hope yr currently strollin in Cornwall and demolishin clotted cream teas on a daily basis.. More praise for Pandora, currently my life-partner, to greet you back home.. Surely reason enough to upgrade from dial-up in Tufnell Mansions? .. big-up anyway as result for the last Fanclub album! And please note also Isobel Campbell (B&S) and Mark Lanegan's collaboration, and Scout Niblett - she is IMMENSE x If yr around Pete, Sondre Lerche (another pandora find) is making me think you'd like him as I type, esp album #2
X
Hello. Thanks Em, someone said i'd like him before, so I have just downloading and am listening now, so far it's good.I'm currently listening to Regina Spektor, Jim Noir, Beirut,The Shins ,Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Mystery Jets , would recommend them all if you've not heard any, i'm not sure if and of them are well known or not but mystery jets seem to be doing well.
Off to see Rufus at V on saturday!
Heard 'sing' by blur for first time in years yesterday and had forgotten how good it was.
That's all my music news.Oh i found martin rossiter hidden on myspace,it made my day. Think I might send him fan mail, i've not got a lot of things to do at the moment. evidently.
Nice choices! Tho don't know 'owt by the Penguins or Jim Noir; to Pandora we go. After 5 years of sustained consideration, I've finally nailed Sing as one of my Famous 'top-3-blur-songs' :) Rossiter forever: enjoy V!
My top 3 Blur songs were always Sing, Sing and Sing.
Oooh I love Sondre Lerche! He's on EMI - Stuart's always bringing his stuff home.
Hurray! I can bring blank cds round to yrs next time :)
Can we meet up for lunch on the 24th (next Thursday) on my way through back to the pool? Last chance to go wild.. in the city before those kids start frontin on yr leisure time....
Xxx
Coolio - that sounds NICE. I have my timetable for next year - lots of kids but then entire days of A-level :)
Ring me and we'll sort something out x
